Two forms, one vitamin
Preformed vitamin A — retinol and its esters (retinyl palmitate, retinyl acetate) — comes from animal foods and many supplements. Provitamin A carotenoids, chiefly beta-carotene, come from orange and green plants; the body converts them as needed. The NIH sets adult needs at 700 mcg RAE for women and 900 mcg RAE for men.
How it lets you see in the dark
Rod cells contain rhodopsin, a light-sensitive molecule built from vitamin A. When light strikes it, rhodopsin changes shape and fires a signal — and then must be rebuilt using fresh vitamin A. Vitamin A also keeps the cornea and the moist surface of the eye healthy. According to the NIH, night blindness is the first sign of deficiency, and long-term deficiency can progress to xerophthalmia.

The seller offers 2-, 3- and 6-bottle bundles. If you take prescription medicine, show the label to your pharmacist first.
See Visivra OfferPaid linkEvidence check
- Deficiency: restoring vitamin A clearly restores night vision and protects the eye surface.
- Adequate intake: no evidence extra vitamin A sharpens vision in well-nourished people.
- AMD: the original AREDS formula used beta-carotene; AREDS2 found it unnecessary and replaced it with lutein and zeaxanthin, which also avoided a lung-cancer risk in smokers (NEI).
Limits and Visivra
| Reference | Amount |
|---|---|
| Adult need | 700–900 mcg RAE/day |
| Upper limit (preformed) | 3,000 mcg/day |
| Beta-carotene | No UL, but high-dose supplements risky for smokers |
| Visivra per serving | 450 micrograms RAE |
Pregnancy: an important caution
High intakes of preformed vitamin A can cause birth defects. The NIH notes experts advise women who are or may become pregnant, and those breastfeeding, not to take high-dose vitamin A supplements. Beta-carotene isn’t known to cause birth defects. Talk to your doctor before taking Visivra if pregnancy is possible.
Smokers and beta-carotene
In two large trials, CARET and ATBC, high-dose beta-carotene supplements increased lung-cancer risk in smokers and in people exposed to asbestos. If you smoke now or did in the past, find out whether Visivra’s vitamin A comes from beta-carotene.
Medicine interactions
- Orlistat reduces absorption of vitamin A and beta-carotene.
- Retinoid medicines (acitretin, bexarotene; isotretinoin for acne) plus vitamin A supplements raise the risk of toxicity.
Also count vitamin A from multivitamins, cod liver oil and beauty supplements.
Reading ‘mcg RAE’ on labels
Vitamin A on modern labels is shown in micrograms of retinol activity equivalents (mcg RAE), which accounts for the fact that beta-carotene is converted less efficiently than preformed vitamin A. Older labels may use International Units (IU). The upper limit of 3,000 mcg applies to preformed vitamin A only, so check whether the label splits the total between retinol and beta-carotene.
Food sources
Preformed vitamin A: liver (extremely high — pregnant women should ask their doctor), fish, eggs and dairy. Provitamin A: carrots, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, spinach, kale and cantaloupe. The NIH notes that most people in the US get enough vitamin A from food, which is why a supplement’s vitamin A is a supporting player rather than the main act.
Verdict
Grade B. Essential for vision, but most people already get enough from food. In Visivra it plays a supporting role; its safety depends on form and dose. Check the label, keep preformed vitamin A under 3,000 mcg/day from all sources, and take extra care if you’re pregnant, smoke or use retinoids.*

Orders go through the seller’s BuyGoods checkout. Check the final total and screenshot it before you confirm.
See Visivra OfferPaid linkCommon questions
Does vitamin A improve eyesight?
It restores night vision in people who are deficient. It doesn’t sharpen vision if you already get enough.
How much vitamin A is safe?
Up to 3,000 mcg/day of preformed vitamin A for adults, from all sources.
Is beta-carotene safer than retinol?
It isn’t linked to birth defects, but high-dose supplements raised lung-cancer risk in smokers.
Can I take vitamin A while pregnant?
Speak to your doctor; high-dose supplements are advised against.
Which vitamin A form is in Visivra?
The sales page doesn’t say; check the label.
